Common Land Rover and Range Rover problems
Land Rovers and Range Rovers are capable, comfortable vehicles, but they are heavy and complex, and some wear points come up again and again. This is our plain-English guide to what to watch for. It is general advice: every vehicle is different, so a diagnostic check is always the best way to find out what is happening with yours.
Air suspension faults
Air suspension is fitted to many Discovery 3, 4 and 5 models, Range Rover Sport and full-size Range Rovers. Typical signs are the vehicle sitting low overnight, a compressor that runs for a long time, or an air suspension warning on the dash. Causes include worn air springs, leaking lines and a tired compressor. Catching it early protects the compressor.
Warning lights and stored fault codes
Modern Land Rovers store fault codes before a warning light appears. A diagnostic scan can find developing problems in the engine, gearbox, brakes and body control systems. See our engine diagnostics page.
Cooling system problems
Coolant leaks, tired hoses and worn water pumps cause overheating, which can be expensive. Check your coolant level regularly and have the system looked at if the temperature gauge moves or you notice a sweet smell.
Gearbox, transfer box and differential oil
These are often treated as "sealed for life" but fluids still degrade. Fresh oil at sensible intervals is cheap insurance against a much larger repair bill.
Brakes on a heavy vehicle
A Land Rover is heavy, so discs and pads wear faster than on a family hatchback. Squealing, a pulsing pedal or a pull to one side are all reasons to book a check.
Diesel particulate filter (DPF) and EGR
Mostly short journeys can leave a DPF clogged. A longer run at speed sometimes helps; if the warning stays on, ask us about DPF regeneration.
Corrosion on older vehicles
On classic Defenders and older Discoveries, chassis, bulkhead and sill condition is the biggest factor in whether a vehicle passes an MOT.
